Eating Trends: Next year's must have diets

We all want to get in shape after over indulging at Christmas. Here are your must have diets that will have guaranteed results.

Juicing Detox
What is it?
For you veggies out there, this diet may be a good option! This is the new trend of diets sweeping the nation, but be warned, it most certainly isn’t for the faint hearted. Juicing is a quick fix diet that should not be carried out as a lifestyle change but instead as a detox. It involves a liquid diet comprising of fruit, vegetables and super foods such as avocados.
Who’s doing it?
Men who require a quick fix mainly or those who would like to detox after a heavy night out drinking. Although it is hard, you will feel rejuvenated and energetic at the end of the week.
What can you eat?
The diet involves eating just fruit and veg, cutting out all meat, dairy and the majority of fat. For a weekly detox, no solid food will be consumed. Smoothies will be made of a mix of fruit and vegetables and should be drunk 3 times per day.
Expensive?
This diet involves fresh produce so is always going to be a little pricey but is the cheapest of the two.
Male Celebs that have done it:
Argent from famous TV programme ‘The only way is Essex” is said to have dabbled in this diet.
Is this diet for you?
This diet requires the most will power out of the two. You must commit to a week full of torture and make sure you don’t succumb to the cries of the chocolate biscuits and kebabs.

The Caveman Diet
What is it?
The caveman diet, like the name suggests, steals the lifestyle tips from our ancestors and works on similar dietary principles to them. The aim of this diet is to increase energy levels, burn fat and get in touch with our natural instincts. It’s not just to lose weight, it’s a way of making yourself healthier.
Who’s doing it?
This is a male orientated diet, getting rid of the fad of starving yourself and replacing it with a list of food dominated by meat. Body builders or fitness fanatics often carry it out to allow them to drop quantities of fat quickly.  It can also boost energy levels for workouts.
What can you eat?
This diet is fantastic if you have no willpower. At first you may find it unusual, but the requirements of eating regularly and little restraints will make it easy to adapt to. Processed food will no longer be part of your diet and you will need to remove salt, sugar, potatoes and beans.
Expensive?
This diet can be fairly expensive, as you need to buy fresh produce regularly.
Male Celebs that have done it:
Jack Osbourne, Matthew McConaughey and Andrew Flintoff are all followers of this diet.
Is this diet for you?
If you want a lifestyle change rather than a fad diet then this is for you. The caveman approach means ditching all processed junk and switching to a new healthier lifestyle, permanently. It’s for those with little will power and who want to find a diet that you will get the hang of quickly.

Male Grooming - Top-Tips

You have all probably pondered at some point whether to grow a beard or moustache or how to maintain one. Although this may seem like a whole load of effort, Richie from Captain Fawcett, a popular grooming products brand, is here to guide you through the process!

“First of all your facial hair can look like a bit of a mess. There will be around a two week period where it will feel prickly, you may get derogatory comments from fellow peers about the lack of hair and it can be uncomfortable for starters – you may just decide to not bother. But YOU HAVE TO GET THROUGH THAT PERIOD,” he says.

Captain Fawcett’s top tips:

  • Don’t start trimming the hair until you know what you’re working with. Some beards can be quite full even if you are bald or some of you guys will have a more narrow upper lip than others. You won’t know what you have to work with unless you get through that growth period.
  • Using a beard oil helps to treat not only the hair but the skin underneath as well. Often containing almond or jojoba oil, they help to relive prickly growth, nourish the hair and soothe the area.
  • Use a moustache wax to train the hair – even if you don’t want a ‘handlebar’ style, use the wax to push the hair out and up to avoid it growing straight down and getting caught in your teeth.
  • Combining two different waxes is great for styling – use a softer wax in the middle and Captain Fawcett expedition wax at the ends for structure.
  • Keep it neat - make sure to brush or comb it and use gels and oils to treat and style the hair.
  • Be determined – have an idea of the look you eventually want to achieve and go for it.
  • If in doubt there are plenty of forums where you can get help or advice like ‘The Handlebar club.

Q&A with a personal trainer
It’s getting to the time of year where all you guys start making or at least think about New Year’s resolutions. Most of the time these resolutions have something to do with the gym, and actually spending some time there this year instead of just having the membership. We spoke to personal trainer George Clarke about the benefits of going to the gym and top tips for beginners.

1) Why did you become a personal trainer?

I became a personal trainer because it was something I was interested in. I have always been really active in doing a lot of sport and was spending so much time at the gym anyway or researching it I thought why not pursue it as a career.

2) What sort of health trends are you aware of that people are following at the moment?

Boxercise is really popular at the moment, especially for beginners. I base a lot of my sessions around it because it is a lot more interesting than running on a tread mill or weight lifting. It combines the two together and is really good fun.

3) What are your top tips for beginners starting at the gym?

It is something always said but stick to it and eat properly, the first attempt is always the hardest. Also don't listen to what other people think when you are in the gym. If you have just started, remember you have to start at a slow pace on the treadmill or low weights with the dumbbells you can’t rush into getting results they take time.

4) Why is it important to stay fit and healthy in your opinion?
I think it's important to stay fit and healthy because you have more energy and have more confidence in yourself, plus internally it puts a huge strain on your body if you don’t follow some sort of diet or routine.

5) What questions do you get asked frequently from people starting at the gym?

Every person asks, how long is it going to take for me to achieve my goal and how do I get a six pack. To which I reply it’s different in every person. Most new people in the gym want results straight away which rarely happen.

6) What’s your fitness philosophy?

I believe that if you know what you want to achieve, and if you want it bad enough you will get it. I like the phrase 'fitness is not a physical challenge. It is a mental one' because people always come up with an excuse not to go the gym or do any exercise, but it's the ones who still go to the gym even with a busy schedule who get the results they want.

7) Do you listen to your own advice that you give to clients?

Yes I think you have to practice what you preach, the knowledge is pretty basic when you break it down. I like to research workouts all the time to make them more interesting, so I test them out myself, keep the good ones and then try to pass them on to my clients who are looking for new workouts.

8) What is your guilty pleasure when it comes to staying healthy?

I have quite a few guilty pleasures, I love chocolate and KFC, but as long as my meals are pretty healthy I allow myself a treat here and there, because if I do a cheat meal it all goes to pot.

Have you even wanted to try using supplements or protein shakes? George discusses the pros and cons and what’s best on the market when it comes to protein shakes.
“Supplements are what they are, if you have the time or knowledge to get them into your diet the can be really handy. But they aren't miracle workers and although they can help they don’t replace exercise.”

PROS

· Protein shakes help repair muscle, which essential to losing weight and building up muscle.
· They are great for on the go, and save a lot of time if you are on a busy schedule.
· Protein is essential to any fitness routine.

CONS

· In all honestly there aren't too many, they are very low risk.
· Consuming too much can affect the kidney; it is debatable they are not as effective as real food.
· They can be expensive for not many servings.

What’s out there? Top four products to use:
1) Impact Whey Isolate priced at £19.99 for 1kg, this product I think is the best, the price is really reasonable and has had the most impact of people I know. It’s one of the more common proteins that people use due to the results. The protein is available from myprotein.com and comes in 12 different flavours including strawberry cream and banana.

2) Sci- MX omni MX hardcore priced at £35.27 for 2kg. Can be brought from performancefoods.com and is available in 4 different flavours including unflavoured. This product is a higher price range, it is a more serious protein to use and will see significant results. 3 of my clients use this brand for protein.

3) Whey Protein priced at £29.95 for 1.5kg, this protein is also one I see a lot used in my gym by my clients. It’s a bit more expensive per kg but will get gradual results over a period of time while exercising and visiting the gym at the same time. It comes as an all in one protein and is available from naturesbest.co.uk.

4) Matrix lean mass XT priced at £43.99 which seems a lot but actually is the best value for money getting 6.8kg worth of protein. The product is available from matrix-nutrition.co.uk and comes in 4 flavours including chocolate cookies and banana cream. This product I don’t see as often and isn't used by many of my clients, there is no particular reason as it is still a good protein just isn't one that is too popular. I have heard that it still gets good results over a steady period of time.
